Why Use Mod Organizer 2?

Mod Organizer 2 (MO2) is the preferred mod manager for Bethesda titles like Skyrim, Fallout 4, and Oblivion. Unlike older tools that write directly into your game's data folder, MO2 uses a virtual file system — your actual game files are never touched. This means you can add and remove mods cleanly without leftover files causing problems.

Step 1: Download and Install MO2

  1. Head to the official Nexus Mods page for Mod Organizer 2 or the GitHub releases page.
  2. Download the installer version (not the archive) for easiest setup.
  3. Run the installer. Do not install MO2 inside your game's folder or inside Program Files — both locations cause permission issues on most Windows setups.
  4. A recommended install path is something like C:\Modding\MO2.

Step 2: Create a New Instance

When MO2 launches for the first time, it will ask you to create an instance. An instance is a self-contained profile tied to a specific game.

  1. Select Create a new instance.
  2. Choose Global Instance (recommended for beginners).
  3. Select the game you want to mod from the list. MO2 will usually detect installed games automatically.
  4. Give the instance a descriptive name, then click Finish.

Step 3: Connect to Nexus Mods

Most mods are hosted on Nexus Mods. Linking MO2 to your Nexus account lets you install mods with a single click.

  1. In MO2, click the puzzle piece icon in the toolbar to open the Nexus integration settings.
  2. Click Connect to Nexus. Your browser will open and ask you to authorize MO2.
  3. Once connected, any mod page on Nexus will have a "Mod Manager Download" button that sends the file directly to MO2.

Step 4: Installing Your First Mod

  1. Find a mod on Nexus Mods and click Mod Manager Download.
  2. Switch back to MO2 — the download will appear in the Downloads tab (right panel).
  3. Double-click the downloaded file to install it. MO2 will prompt you to confirm the mod name.
  4. The mod now appears in your left panel (the mod list). Check the checkbox to enable it.

Step 5: Understanding the Two Panels

MO2 has two critical panels, and understanding both is key to a stable mod setup:

  • Left panel (Mod List): Controls which mods are active. Mods higher in the list can be overwritten by mods lower in the list when file conflicts occur.
  • Right panel (Plugin List / Load Order): Controls the order in which .esp and .esm plugin files are loaded by the game engine. This affects in-game behavior and quest logic.

Most beginners only need to manage the left panel initially. Tools like LOOT (integrated into MO2) can automatically sort your plugin load order.

Step 6: Running the Game Through MO2

This step is critical and often missed by beginners. You must always launch the game through MO2, not through Steam or your desktop shortcut. This activates MO2's virtual file system so the game can see your mods.

  • Use the Run dropdown in the top-right of MO2 to launch the game or its launcher.
  • You can create desktop shortcuts from MO2 that automatically route through it.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Installing MO2 inside Program Files — causes permission errors.
  • Launching the game from Steam directly — your mods won't load.
  • Ignoring conflict warnings — the lightning bolt icons in MO2 warn you when mods overwrite each other's files.
  • Installing dozens of mods at once — add a few at a time and test the game to isolate any issues early.

Next Steps

Once you're comfortable with basic installation, explore MO2's Profiles feature to maintain separate mod lists for different playthroughs, and learn how to use LOOT within MO2 to keep your load order clean and crash-free.
